Today I unlocked a new level of adulting achievement: I got my first crown!
And yes, the scrubs-wearing gentleman requesting payment after my dental experience said, “You got a crown for Christmas! Just like a princess!”
Eesh. And, lucky me, when they whittled down my molar (which seems to go against the natural order of things), behold! A decaying filling was discovered hiding behind the neighboring tooth! So not only did I receive the gift of a “pretend tooth” (as I described it to my 4-year-old), I had a filling too! Two for the price of one! (I kid, I kid, as the whole endeavor cost about as much as an actual royal crown).
Ah well, I’m hoping this pearly pretend food masher holds up through the next two weeks of Christmas goodies, which, come to think of it, may be why I needed so much dental repair in the first place…
Anywho! On to the cuter items on the agenda!
George has always had a gift for gab, and he picked up words very early in his little life. I love this, because it’s always fascinating to hear what’s going on in his brain. Olivia, who just turned 2, has a vocabulary that grows every day, but she still gets frustrated with me regularly when I can’t understand what she’s saying (on repeat until my smile-and-nod approach annoys her enough to quit trying).
Here are some of the darndest things my eldest has come up with in the past few weeks:
George: Mama, what did Thomas Jefferson do? *pause* Do I need to get my (presidents’) book? I have to get my book when you need help.

George: They’re long. They have feet sleeves!
George: I want to kick the sky! (He said this while I pushed him on a swing. It was all so exuberant.)
Mama: Thank you for helping! (after we put goodies in snack bags for my Sunday school class)
George: I’m a bit of an expert at helping. (quoting Daddy Pig from Peppa Pig)
George: Those are very cute cows!
(They were horses. I guess we need to stop reading so many books and visit a few more petting zoos…)
George: What are those?
Mama: They’re called pantyhose. They keep my legs warm.
George: What is a panty hoe?
And then I intentionally wandered off so the conversation wouldn’t take a weird turn…

1. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan – I’m SO close to finishing! Thoroughly enjoying this bad boy.
2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows by J.K. Rowling – I’m almost done listening to the entire series for the second time. The Hubs and I are also watching the movies as I finish the books so I can say exactly how the movies fail to match the books.
3. I’d Rather Be Reading: The Delights and Dilemmas of the Reading Life by Anne Bogel – A very short audiobook I switch on while washing dishes. It’s an adorably accurate account of life as a fanatical reader and lover of books.
4. The Dawning of Indestructible Joy by John Piper – A unique, daily read for Advent.
