Mama’s 2018 Reading Challenge: July

Wait. Did I type that right? How can it possibly be July? It’s hard to believe, friends.

Then again, I keep getting these out-of-nowhere chills of excitement about Christmas approaching (yes, I’m that kind of Christmas-lover). Sorry if this gives you a shot of anxiety.

And so, without further ado, Mama’s Reading Challenge pick for July chosen by…Dada!

OK, no, I can’t refer to him as Dada. That’s super weird. Let’s try that again.

Blah, blah, blah…Reading Challenge pick for July chosen by…the Husband!

Once and Future King
The cover states, “The World’s Greatest Fantasy Classic.” Them’s bold words, book.

I’ll be reading The Once and Future King by T.H. White, a book on Camelot, King Arthur, and the lot first published in 1958.

Well, the Husband and I have been discussing this since I started the challenge in January, so I always knew it was coming. It’s been haughtily eyeing me from our bookshelf ever since.

I’ve interviewed said husband to give context as to his choice. And also thereby proving he’s a good sport.

Me: When did you first read this book?

Husband: High school. It was a summer reading option, and we had a lot of options.

Me: Why did you pick this one that summer?

Husband: I’d guess it was between the title and the general theme. I knew it had The Sword and the Stone in it. It was a more interesting read, though it certainly wasn’t the shortest book. (It’s 639 pages…)

Me: Why are you making me read it?

Husband: I’m not making you do anything!

Me: Ok, then, why do you think I need to read it?

Husband: You see a lot of Arthurian legend books—or at least you hear a lot about it—but I don’t know how many people actually read them.

Me: But you’re only making me read The Sword and the Stone? Is this just because you’re being nice? Should I read the whole thing?

Husband: I think there are other interesting things. I can remember that book making me mad at times too, but I’m not going to spoil it.

Me: Did Disney do a good job with the Sword and the Stone?

Husband: Not bad.

Me: Is the book better than the movie?

Husband: I almost always think so, and I think this is no exception.

And there you have it. I guess I should be grateful he chose a fantasy novel. He could’ve picked one of his current favorites, such as Doing Bayesian Data Analysis or Bioinformatics Algorithms. And, yes, those are his beach reads.

FYI, I’m really looking forward to the book’s portrayal of this moment:

King Arthur

I’ll let you know what I find. And if coconuts are involved.

What would your spouse recommend you read?
